Once at the cable car station, we follow signs for the "Pfänderweg", a scenic trail leading up to the summit, climbing around 600 meters in elevation. The path begins gently, winding through quiet neighborhoods, then transitions into forested hills where the trail becomes steeper. Well-maintained switchbacks help make the climb manageable and pleasant, with benches along the way for short breaks.
As we ascend, we pause frequently to admire the expanding views of Bregenz, the shimmering Lake Constance, and — on clear days — the Swiss and German shorelines. The forest gradually gives way to alpine meadows filled with blooming wildflowers and fluttering butterflies during spring and summer.
After about 1.5 to 2 hours, we reach the mountain station of the Pfänder cable car at around 1,064 meters above sea level. The summit offers an incredible 360-degree panoramic view — from Lake Constance to the Allgäu Alps, across to the Swiss Alps, and deep into the Bregenzerwald mountain region. It’s the perfect spot for a well-deserved break, whether at the mountain restaurant or on a scenic bench overlooking the lake.
A special highlight at the summit is the Alpine Wildlife Park, located right next to the station. On a short loop trail, visitors can see ibex, deer, mouflons, wild boar, and marmots — a fun and educational detour, especially for families.
For the descent, we choose the Fluhweg trail, which starts near the summit. This route is slightly longer but more gradual, leading through wide alpine meadows with traditional farmhouses and eventually into cool, shaded woodland. Along the way, we enjoy more scenic views of the Rhine Valley and Vorarlberg’s rolling hills. After about 1.5 hours, we return to Bregenz.
This circular hike offers the perfect mix of physical activity, nature, and sweeping vistas — an unforgettable experience in one of the most beautiful regions around Lake Constance.
